what songs that maybe arent your favourites full stop intrigue you for the lyrics alone?

this lyric below is actually my favourite REM song anyway, but i've never been able to fully work out what the songs about, and I like that fact

REM "HOPE"

You want to go out Friday
And you want to go forever
You know that it sounds childish
That you dreamt of alligators
You hope that we are with you
And you hope you're recognized
You want to go forever
You see it in my eyes
I'm lost in the confusion
And it doesn't seem to matter
You really can't believe it
And you hope it's getting better

You want to trust the doctors
Their procedure is the best
But the last try was a failure
And the intern was a mess
And they did the same to Matthew
And he bled 'til Sunday night
They're saying don't be frightened
But you're weakened by the sight of it
You lock into a pattern
And you know that it's the last ditch
You're trying to see through it
And it doesn't make sense
But they're saying don't be frightened
And they're killing alligators
And they're hog-tied
And accepting of the struggle

You want to trust religion
And you know it's allegory
But the people who are followers
Have written their own story
So you look up to the heavens
And you hope that it's a spaceship
And it's something from your childhood
You're thinking don't be frightened

You want to climb the ladder
You want to see forever
You want to go out Friday
And you want to go forever
And you want to cross your DNA
To cross your DNA with something reptile

And you're questioning the sciences
And questioning religion
You're looking like an idiot
And you no longer care
And you want to bridge the schism,
A built-in mechanism to protect you
And you're looking for salvation
And you're looking for deliverance
You're looking like an idiot
And you no longer care
'Cause you want to climb the ladder
You want to go forever
And you want to go out Friday
You want to go forever

also "false flags" by Massive Attack. just genius lyrically

In city shoes
Of clueless blues
Pays the views
And no-mans news
Blades will fade from blood to sport
The heroin's cut these fuses short
Smokers rode a colonial pig
Drink and frame this pain i think
I'm melting silver poles my dear
You bleed your wings and then disappear
The moving scenes and pilot lights
Smithereens have got 'em scaling heights
Modern times come talk me down
And battle lines are drawn across this town
Parisian boys without your names
Ghetto stones instead of chains
Talk 'em down cause it's up in flames
And nothing's changed
Parisian boys without your names
Riot like 1968 again
The days of rage yeah nothing's changed
more pretty flames
In school i would just bite my tongue
And now your words they strike me dumb
The flags are false and they contradict
They point and click which wounds to lick
On avenues this christian breeze
Turns its heart to more needles please
Our eyes roll back and we beg for more
It frays this skin and then underscore
The case for war you spin and bleed
The cells you fill screensavers feed
The girls you breed the soaps that you write
The graceless charm of your gutter snipes
The moving scenes and suburbanites
And smithereens got 'em scaling heights
Modern times come talk me down
The battle lines are drawn across this town
English boys without your names
Ghetto stones instead of chains
Hearts and minds and u.s. Planes
Nothing's changed
And english boys without your names
Riot like the 1980's again
The days of rage yeah nothing's changed
More pretty flames

Oh is this the way they say the future's meant to feel?
Or just twenty thousand people standing in a field
And I don't quite understand just what this feeling is
But that okay cos we're all sorted out for E's and Wizz
And tell me when the spaceship lands
Cos all this has just got to mean something

CHORUS
In the middle of the night
It feels alright but then tomorrow morning
Ohh Ohh when you come down

Oh yeah the pirate radio told us what was going down
Got the tickets from some fucked up bloke in Camden Town
And no one seems to know exactly where it is
But that's okay, cos we're all sorted out for E's and Wizz
At 4 0'clock the normal world seems very very very far away
Hey hey

CHORUS

Just keep on moving
Everybody asks your name they say we're all the same
And now it's "Nice one, Geezer"-and that's far the conversation went
I lost my friends, I dance alone, it's 6 o'clock, I wanna go home
But it's no way not today, makes you wonder what it meant
And the hollow feeling grows and grows and grows and grows
And you wanna call your mother and say,
"Mother, I can never come home again because I seem to have left
an important part of my brain somewhere in a field in Hampshire."
Alright

CHORUS

Ooohh Oohh when you come down
Oohh what if you never come down?

^^ love that song

this means a lot to me for personal reason.

"That Kiss" -The Courteeners

The way that you looked at him, and then you looked at me.
You must think that I’m proper blind,
Proper blind not to see.

That I was just a stop gap sitting somewhere in-between his hand and his lap
Let me tell you that I wasn’t born yesterday, my dear.

That kiss that lasted too long, we probably shouldn’t have danced to that song
It was nothing, it was everything, it’s really such a shame its so hard to explain to you

He’s back in town tonight, he’s expecting you round a quarter to nine
but you wont be there, cuz he prefers the proverbial of you.

If he only knew what you thought, the lust, the lack of trust, the temptation you thought
He’s worthless as maxims and flouts
He’s just a passing fashion and he’s on his way out

That kiss that lasted too long, we probably shouldn’t have danced to that song
It was nothing, it was everything, its really such a shame its so hard to explain to you.

I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it
I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it
I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it

I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it
I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it
I know that I shouldn’t but I enjoyed it

That kiss that lasted too long, we probably shouldn’t have danced to that song
It was nothing, it was absolutely everything, its really such a shame its so hard to explain to you.

This is my favorite:

You want to cuss and fight
In the basement
The kid want to cuss and fight
In the basement
Warm black rooster worn white hand
The young kids got my name
You like to cuss and fight
In the basement
The kid want to cuss and fight
In the basement
Got a rattle snake on in the basement
The young snake's got my name

You wanna swing that hand
In the basement
The kid wanna swing that hand
In the basement
Drop your medicine, six white sons
The young snake's got my name

You want to cuss and fight
In the basement
The kid want to cuss and fight
In the basement
Got a rattle snake on in the basement
The young snake's got my name

I'm not coming home again
I'm not coming home again

I'm not coming home again
I'm not coming home again

You want to fuck and fight
In the basement
The kid wanna fuck and fight
In the basement
Got a rattle snake on in the basement
The young snake's got my name

You want to fuck and fight
In the basement
The kid like to fuck and fight
In the basement
Got a rattle snake, six white sons
The young kid's got my name

I'm not coming home again
I'm not coming home again

I'm not coming home again
I'm not coming home again

You want to cuss and fight
In the basement
The kid want to cuss and fight
In the basement
Got a rattle skate on in the basement
The young snake's got my name

That´s "Black Rooster" by The Kills, I love the lyrics, extreme powerful song.
Never really worked out what it´s about, but I´ve heard it´s about a kid taking the violent relationship of the parents as a example and gets violent, too.

Early one mornin’ the sun was shinin’,
I was layin’ in bed
Wond’rin’ if she’d changed at all
If her hair was still red.
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like mama’s homemade dress
Papa’s bankbook wasn’t big enough.
And I was standin’ on the side of the road
Rain fallin’ on my shoes
Heading out for the east coast
Lord knows I’ve paid some dues gettin’ through,
Tangled up in blue.

She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam, I guess,
But I used a little too much force.
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out west
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best.
She turned around to look at me
As I was walkin’ away
I heard her say over my shoulder,
"we’ll meet again someday on the
avenue,"
Tangled up in blue.

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell.
So I drifted down to new orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Workin’ for a while on a fishin’ boat
Right outside of delacroix.
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind,
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew
Tangled up in blue.

She was workin’ in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer,
I just kept lookin’ at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear.
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I’s just about to do the same,
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "don’t I know your name? "
I muttered somethin’ underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,
Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a
pipe
"i thought you’d never say hello," she
said
"you look like the silent type."
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an italian poet
From the thirteenth century.
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin’ coal
Pourin’ off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,
Tangled up in blue.

I lived with them on montague street
In a basement down the stairs,
There was music in the cafes at night
And revolution in the air.
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died.
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside.
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn,
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin’ on like a bird that flew,
Tangled up in blue.

So now I’m goin’ back again,
I got to get to her somehow.
All the people we used to know
They’re an illusion to me now.
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter’s wives.
Don’t know how it all got started,
I don’t know what they’re doin’ with their
lives.
But me, I’m still on the road
Headin’ for another joint
We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,
Tangled up in blue.

The colder the night gets,
The further she strays.
And he doesn't like it,
Being this way.
And she tried so hard to steer away from the meeting place,
But her heart had led her there.
She clings to his consciousness,
Wherever he lays.
He struggles to sleep at night and during the day.
He's worried she's waiting in his dreams to drag him back to the meeting place.
His love had left him there.
Where her voice still echoes,
I'm sorry I met you darling,
I'm sorry I met you.
As she turned into the night, all he has was the words,
I'm sorry I met you darling,
I'm sorry I left you.
For weeks they had strolled around,
Playing the fools.
They knew the time would come and time would be cruel
Because it is cruel to everyone
He's crying out from the meeting place
He's stranded himself there

Do you know what's worth fighting for,
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away
And you feel yourself suffocating?
Does the pain weigh out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside?
You're in ruins

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

When you're at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul
Your faith walks on broken glass
And the hangover doesn't pass
Nothing's ever built to last
You're in ruins.

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

Did you try to live on your own
When you burned down the house and home?
Did you stand too close to the fire?
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone

When it's time to live and let die
And you can't get another try
Something inside this heart has died
You're in ruins.

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I
